European Hornbeam - Carpinus betulus Emerald Avenue
Hornbeam and beech get mixed up on plans constantly. The quick test is the leaf: hornbeam is sharply toothed and deeply pleated along the veins, beech is smooth edged and wavy. The practical difference matters more, because Carpinus betulus tolerates clay, compaction and periods of wet feet that would finish a beech, which is why it does so much of the work in Australian urban planting.
Emerald Avenue is a selected form grown for uniformity, with a tidy upright oval crown and even branching, so a row of them actually matches. That is the reason to pay for a named clone over seedling hornbeam.
It is deciduous, dark green through summer, turning yellow and gold before dropping. Clipped as a hedge or pleached screen it holds much of that dead leaf through winter, giving you a coppery screen where you would otherwise have bare sticks. Bark is smooth grey over sinewy, fluted trunk muscling as it ages. Cool to temperate districts suit it; it is not a tree for the humid subtropics.
