Hornbeam - Carpinus betulus
Hornbeam or European beech? They get specified interchangeably and they should not be. Check the leaf: hornbeam is sharply toothed along the margin and pleated between the veins, while beech is smooth edged and gently wavy. Then check the site, because hornbeam will take heavier, wetter ground and repeated clipping that beech resents.
Clipped hornbeam also does the trick people actually want from a deciduous hedge. Rather than standing bare all winter, it holds its dead leaves as a pale tan curtain until new growth pushes them off in spring, so a hedge or a pleached screen keeps working as a privacy layer through the cold months. The trunk is worth a look too, grey and fluted like twisted rope on older stems.
This is a cool climate tree. It performs in Canberra, the Southern Highlands, Victoria and the Adelaide Hills, and it sulks through humid subtropical summers. Container stock goes as large as 400L if you need an established screen from day one.
