Indian Bean Tree - Catalpa bignonioides
Everything about this tree is oversized. The heart shaped leaves are broad enough to overlap into a solid canopy, the flower trusses stand up like candles in early summer with each white bell frilled and flecked yellow and purple in the throat, and the seed pods that follow are long thin beans that dangle all winter after the leaves have gone.
That makes it a strong feature for a big lawn or a courtyard where you want dense shade and some theatre. It leafs out very late in spring, so do not panic at bare branches while everything else is away.
The regrets are all about mess and exposure. Big leaves make big litter, the pods drop over months onto whatever is below, and hot dry wind scorches the leaf margins brown by late summer in inland gardens. Give it shelter, decent soil and room to spread. Bare root stock is offered alongside potted and advanced sizes.
