Atlas Cedar - Cedrus atlantica Glauca Blue Cedar
Give this one room. The Blue Atlas Cedar is a genuine forest conifer, stiffly upright and open when young with a strongly ascending leader, then broadening over decades into a wide, flat topped tree with heavy horizontal limbs. The needles are short, held in tight whorled rosettes along the older wood, and vary from grey green to a strong silvery blue.
It belongs in cool districts with real winters and reliable drainage: the NSW tablelands and southern highlands, Canberra, most of Victoria, the Adelaide Hills and the cooler parts of WA. Humid coastal subtropics suit it poorly.
Do not confuse it with Glauca Pendula, the weeping form sold for small gardens. This is the upright tree, and in time it will dwarf a suburban block, lift paving and shade a whole yard. Plant it well clear of the house and of services, stake only lightly, and leave the lower branches on where you can, since the sweeping skirt is the best part of a mature specimen.
