Eastern Redbud - Cercis canadensis
Get the position right the first time. Redbud resents root disturbance and sulks after being moved, so it is not a tree to shuffle around the garden while you make up your mind.
What you get in return is one of the better small deciduous trees for a courtyard. Bare grey branches break out in small magenta pink pea flowers in early spring, clustered straight onto the wood and even along the trunk, well before any leaf shows. Foliage follows as neat heart shaped leaves on a wide, slightly zigzagging branch structure, colouring yellow in autumn.
Drainage matters above everything else. Heavy wet clay brings on collar rot and canker, and dieback of individual limbs is the standard complaint from anyone who planted one in a low spot. Full sun to part shade, moderate water, moderate growth rate. Bare root stock is offered here alongside potted sizes, which is the sensible way to plant a group while the trees are dormant, provided they go straight into prepared ground.
