Chinese Redbud - Cercis chinensis Faerie Queen
The flowers come before the leaves, clustered straight onto bare wood in small pea shaped bunches that run along the stems and even break out of older branches. Flowering from old wood is what sets the redbuds apart from other spring blossom trees, and it also means a hard winter prune will cut the display off before it starts.
Chinese redbud behaves more like a large multi stemmed shrub than a single trunked tree, broader and twiggier than the American species, and the leaves that follow are rounded hearts that stay clean through summer and turn yellow in autumn.
It resents root disturbance. Plant it once, into soil that genuinely drains, and then leave it alone. Cercis dislikes wet feet and is prone to dieback and canker in heavy ground, so cut any dead wood back to clean tissue as soon as you spot it rather than waiting. Sizes here go up to 150L for an established multi stemmed plant.
