Metallic Palm - Chamaedorea metallica
Most palms sold as indoor plants are seedlings of something that really wants to be far larger. Chamaedorea metallica is not. It is a truly small, single trunked Mexican palm, and its leaf is undivided rather than feathered: a broad wedge with a notched fishtail tip and a dull blue grey sheen that gives the plant its name.
That sheen is the first thing to go if you put it in direct sun, which also scorches the leaf margins. Deep shade suits it, indoors or under dense canopy in a frost free garden. It is slow, so a 250mm plant represents real time on the farm.
Watch for spider mite in dry, heated rooms; the leaf undersides go stippled and dusty before you ever see the mites. Keep the mix free draining and let the surface dry between waterings, because the thin stem rots at the base if it sits wet. Do not confuse it with the parlour palm, Chamaedorea elegans, which has ordinary divided fronds.
