Dracaena Song of India
At 90 litres this is not a shelf plant. Song of India is a variegated selection of Dracaena reflexa, and at this size it comes as a branched, multi-headed specimen with several leaning stems, each tipped by a dense whorl of short leaves margined in cream to chartreuse. It reads as a small indoor tree, and in frost-free coastal Queensland and northern New South Wales it will hold that shape outdoors in bright shade.
Two things go wrong with it. Light first: in a dim corner the new growth comes through narrower and greener and the variegation quietly disappears, so give it bright indirect light. Water second: reflexa hates sitting wet, and it is sensitive to fluoride and salts in tap water, which shows up as brown papery leaf tips. Water thoroughly, let the top of the mix dry, and empty the saucer.
The stems are flexible and lean toward the light, so turn the pot every few weeks unless the lean is the look you want. Flat $99 delivery applies to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA on orders from $399.
