Umbrella Tree - Schefflera amate (Heptapleurum)
Keep this one in a pot, or well away from drains and beds, if you are gardening anywhere warm and coastal. Amate is a selected form of the Queensland umbrella tree, and the species has naturalised into bushland in parts of Queensland and northern New South Wales, with roots that are notorious for finding pipes and lifting paving.
Indoors it is a different plant entirely, and indoor use is exactly what Amate was chosen for. The leaves are large and glossy, held in the characteristic whorl of leaflets radiating from one point, the green is deeper than old seedling stock, and it carries better resistance to the mites and leaf spot that used to plague indoor scheffleras. Give it bright indirect light: in a dim corner it goes gangly, sheds its lower leaves and reaches, and no amount of feeding corrects that.
Water when the top few centimetres of mix are dry, and tip prune while it is young to keep it branching rather than running up as a single bare stem.
