Gaura Baby Butterflies Rose (Oenothera lindheimeri)
You will see this one labelled two ways. Botanists moved gaura into Oenothera some years back, but the nursery trade has largely kept the old name, so Baby Butterflies Rose turns up under both. It is one of the compact selections bred to fix the main fault of the original species, which was a habit of growing tall and then flopping open in the middle after rain.
The flowers are rose pink, small, and held on fine wiry stems that move in the slightest breeze, which is where the butterfly comparison comes from. Flowering runs on through the warm months rather than arriving in a single flush.
Evergreen in milder districts. It wants full sun and soil that drains freely, and the quickest way to lose one is to plant it in a garden bed on a regular lawn irrigation cycle, because the crown rots in wet clay. Shear the whole plant back when it starts looking thin and it rebuilds. Good in gravel gardens, kerbside strips and pots. Supplied in 140mm.
