Spider Flower - Grevillea spp. Assorted Standards
A standard is an ordinary shrub grown or grafted onto a single clear trunk, so what turns up in a 330mm pot is a ball of grevillea foliage on a stick, ready to flank a gate or run down the middle of a driveway strip. This line is supplied as assorted varieties, so flower colour and leaf type vary with what is ready to go. Order the full run in one go if you need a matched row.
Grafted grevilleas are commonly worked onto a rootstock chosen for tolerance of heavier and more alkaline soils, which is why standards often succeed in gardens where own root plants quietly fail.
- Stake the trunk for the first couple of seasons. Wind rocks the head and the graft union is the weak point.
- Rub off every shoot on the trunk or below the graft, or the rootstock will outgrow the top.
- Prune the head lightly after each flush to keep it round rather than one sided, and use a low phosphorus native fertiliser only.
