Sweet Gum - Liquidambar styraciflua Oakville Highlight
Seedling liquidambars planted through Sydney and Melbourne last century gave those streets a magnificent shade canopy and wildly inconsistent autumn colour. Oakville Highlight was raised to fix the second half of that problem, an Australian selection propagated so every tree colours the same way, working through orange and scarlet into deep red and purple.
Everything else is classic sweet gum. Fast growth, an upright young tree that spreads into a broad crown, big glossy star shaped leaves, and a canopy dense enough to turn a hot western aspect into usable garden. Full sun and moderate water suit it. Do not plant it tight to a house, a pool shell or a narrow verge. The surface roots are aggressive, and the hard spiny seed balls that follow flowering are unpleasant on paving and around bare feet. In a park, a large lawn or a wide street reserve it is difficult to beat. This is one of the more widely grown selections, so advanced sizes are usually on hand.
