African Daisy - Osteospermum Serenity Red (Dimorphotheca)
Do not expect fire-engine red. Red in Osteospermum sits closer to a deep raspberry, wine or brick tone, it holds that depth best in cooler weather, and it usually lightens a shade under hard summer sun. Knowing that up front saves a lot of disappointment on the day the first flowers open.
The darkness is worth planning around. Deep reds vanish against dark mulch or red brickwork from more than a few metres away, so put this one where there is something pale behind it: rendered walls, light gravel, silver foliage, or a pale pot.
Like the rest of the Serenity range it makes a low mound, flowers heaviest in spring, takes a rest through midsummer heat, then gives a second run as autumn cools. Cut it back lightly between flushes rather than hacking it once a year. Water it the way you would a Mediterranean plant, a deep soak once the soil has dried rather than a daily sprinkle, and it will last considerably longer than one kept constantly damp.

This plant is available in 2 sizes, from 140mm up to 170mm, priced from $16.95 to $21.95 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant.
