Paperbark - Melaleuca lateritia (Callistemon)
Despite the Paperbark heading on this listing, Melaleuca lateritia is not a papery barked tree at all. It is an open, upright shrub from south west Western Australia, usually staying at large shrub scale, with narrow soft leaves and orange to brick red brushes carried along the stems through the warmer months. Robin Redbreast Bush is the name most growers know it by, and those flowers are the reason to plant it, because honeyeaters work them constantly.
Full sun, low to moderate water once settled, and a moderate to fast rate of growth mean it fills a gap in a screen or windbreak quickly. It also handles seasonally wet ground better than most Western Australian shrubs, so it suits a swale, a drainage line or a low spot that stays damp after rain.
The usual failure is humidity. In warm coastal gardens on the eastern seaboard it can be short lived, so give it air movement and free draining soil, and tip prune straight after each flush to keep the base clothed rather than bare and twiggy.
