Pear - Beurre Bosc Pyrus communis
You will need a second pear variety nearby before this one crops properly. Bosc sets poorly on its own pollen, so pair it with something that overlaps in flowering time, Williams and Packham being the usual partners in Australian backyards.
The fruit is the reason to bother. Long necked, with dull cinnamon russeting over the whole skin, dense creamy flesh and a spicy aromatic flavour, it is the pear that holds its shape when poached or baked while softer varieties collapse into mush. Pick it firm and ripen it indoors, because pears left hanging until they feel soft have already gone grainy at the core.
This is a deciduous tree that needs a proper cold winter to break bud evenly, so it performs in the southern states and cooler tablelands rather than the warm coastal subtropics. Prune in winter to an open framework that lets light into the centre, and expect pear and cherry slug, the small dark sawfly larvae that graze the upper leaf surface into lace, from early summer onward.
