Portuguese Laurel - Prunus lusitanica
Formal work is where Portuguese laurel earns its keep. It clips into a hard edged hedge, holds a lollipop standard for years without going scruffy, and lines a driveway without the shot hole disease that catches up with cherry laurel in Australian conditions. The dark glossy leaves sit on distinctly red stalks, which gives clipped work more life up close than a flat green wall.
Early summer brings slender upright spikes of small cream flowers held clear of the foliage, followed by little fruits that ripen red then almost black. Bees work them hard.
Once it has a root system it takes more dry weather and more lime in the soil than most laurels, and it will grow in full sun or in a good deal of shade. Two cautions. The fruit and foliage are toxic if eaten, which is worth weighing near stock or small children. And clipped hedges keep a better face from two light trims a year than from one hard cut.
