Solitaire Palm - Ptychosperma elegans Multi planted (Seaforthia elegans)
Older catalogues and plans still call this Seaforthia elegans, and that name is worth knowing, because the palm it gets confused with, the Alexandra palm, once carried it too. Solitaire palm is the smaller, finer one: a slim grey ringed trunk, a short green crownshaft, and a modest crown of arching fronds whose leaflets look bluntly cut off at the tips, as though trimmed with scissors.
Multi planted stock gives you several stems of staggered height in the one pot, so it reads as a clump from the day it goes in. That is how it is normally used here, in pool surrounds, narrow side gardens, atrium beds and courtyard corners where a single trunk would look thin.
It is a warm climate palm, evergreen, happiest in a sheltered humid spot with steady moisture and protection from cold dry wind, which browns the leaflet tips quickly. Mature palms carry heavy crops of red fruit that drop and stain, so keep them back from pale paving. Frost is not something it forgives.
