Ornamental Pear - Pyrus calleryana Aristocrat
Where Capital and the tighter forms stay narrow and upright, this one builds a broad pyramid with wider branch angles, and those angles matter: the sharp forked crotches that cause limb failure in some callery pear selections are less common here. It is the ornamental pear to reach for when there is room for a canopy rather than a column.
White blossom covers the bare branches in early spring, ahead of the leaves. The foliage that follows is glossy, leathery and wavy edged, and it colours late in the season through red to purple, often holding on the tree well into the cold months in milder districts. Deciduous, moderate in growth, and content in full sun.
It tolerates compacted urban soil and takes pruning for clearance without protest, which is why it turns up in driveway avenues, car park islands and street plantings across the eastern states. Give it more width than a narrow verge allows. Bare root stock lifted in winter is the economical way to plant a long run, provided the ground is prepared before it arrives.
