Black Locust - Robinia pseudoacacia Lace Lady
Unlike the mophead robinias, Lace Lady is grown for its stems rather than its canopy. Every branch twists and corkscrews as it extends, and the small pinnate leaves are curled and crumpled along them, so the plant reads as texture rather than shade. Once the leaves drop, the contorted winter framework becomes the feature, which is the main reason it ends up near an entry, in a large courtyard pot, or somewhere it can be uplit at night.
It is usually offered grafted, giving a twisted head on a straight stem, and it stays small for a robinia. Watch for rootstock suckering below the graft and remove it early while it is soft. Full sun matters more than with most trees here, because shade makes the growth longer and straighter and loses the whole effect.
Being deciduous, it will be a bundle of sticks for a few months, so do not use it where year-round screening is wanted. Bare root and potted stock are both listed.
