Dwarf Palmetto - Sabal minor
Unlike most fan palms sold in Australia, Sabal minor never really builds a trunk. It sits as a low clump of stiff, blue-green, deeply divided fans rising straight out of the ground on long petioles, and it takes its time getting there. Growth is slow enough that a 60L plant represents years of work in the pot.
The trade-off for that patience is toughness. Dwarf palmetto is one of the hardiest palms in cultivation, unbothered by frost that disfigures tropical palms, and it is also unusual in coping with heavy soil that goes periodically wet, since it grows naturally in low-lying woodland in the southern United States. It handles part shade too, which makes it genuinely useful under established canopy where other palms thin out and lean.
Two things to know. It resents root disturbance, so choose the position once and leave it. And it is slow, so expect it to look much the same for a year or so after planting before new fans start pushing. We deliver to QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, ACT and WA.
