Wattle - Acacia baileyana Purpurea
The purple form of Cootamundra wattle is grown for its new growth, where each fresh flush of ferny bipinnate foliage opens plum to bronze before hardening off to the usual blue-grey. Set against the golden flower heads of the late winter and early spring flush, it looks like nothing else in a native windbreak.
It is fast, which is both the appeal and the catch. Expect a tree that puts on size quickly and then thins, sheds limbs and ages out early. The wood is brittle, so it needs some shelter on exposed ridgelines. Prune lightly after flowering only, since cuts back into bare old wood generally stay bare.
Take the weed question seriously. Acacia baileyana is native to a small area around Cootamundra in NSW and has naturalised well beyond it, particularly through parts of Victoria and southern NSW. Keep it away from bushland boundaries and check your local council listing before mass planting.

This plant is available in 5 sizes, from 200mm up to 500mm, priced from $29.95 to $229.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
