The nation's floral emblem, golden wattle (Acacia pycnantha), heads the list, joined by silver wattle (A. dealbata) with its ferny blue foliage and the purple-flushed Cootamundra wattle form Purpurea. Growing notes: wattles are the sprinters of the bush, fast to establish, fast to flower, and content in poor soil with no feeding beyond a little native fertiliser. Give them sun and drainage, tip-prune after flowering to keep shrubby species dense, and accept the trade-off that the fastest species live one to two decades rather than a lifetime; blackwood and myall are the long-lived exceptions. Winter flowers feed bees when little else is open.
