Marguerite Daisy - Argyranthemum Summit Red (Chrysanthemum frutescens)
Through the cooler half of the year, when much of the garden has gone quiet, marguerite daisies carry the show. Summit Red builds a rounded, soft stemmed mound of finely cut evergreen foliage smothered in single daisies in a strong red toned shade with a contrasting eye. Flowering is heaviest in spring and autumn and slows through real heat. Older books and labels still call the plant Chrysanthemum frutescens.
Treat it as fast, generous and short lived. The common mistake is letting it go leggy: shear the whole plant back by roughly a third as each flush finishes, and cut while there is still leafy growth to cut into, because stems taken back into bare old wood often refuse to reshoot. Full sun and free draining soil are essential, since heavy wet ground in a humid summer rots it from the base. Use it massed at a border front, in pots, or as filler while slower shrubs size up, and replace tired plants rather than nursing them.
