Swamp Fox Banksia - Banksia telmatiaea
In the seasonally swampy sand heaths north of Perth, this small banksia does something most of its relatives cannot: it stands in ground that is waterlogged all winter and bone dry by late summer. That makes swamp fox banksia genuinely useful for the low, boggy corner of a native garden where the drainage is only good for half the year.
It is a modest shrub with fine narrow leaves and small woolly flower heads in dull gold and grey-brown, often half buried inside the bush rather than displayed on top. Nobody plants it for a show from the street. It is a plant for collectors, for revegetation work and for gardeners who like the odd corners of the genus, and the heads still carry nectar for honeyeaters.
Full sun, sandy soil, and no phosphorus fertiliser. Winter wet it will take; rich, permanently moist garden loam it will not, and that distinction is where most cultivated plants of this species are lost.
