Bauhinia corymbosa
Most plants sold as bauhinia in Australia are small flowering trees. This one is a climber, and confusing the two causes a lot of disappointment at planting time. Bauhinia corymbosa is a slender twining vine from southern China, holding on by tendrils, with small twin-lobed leaves like pairs of butterfly wings barely the size of a thumbnail. The overall texture on a pergola or wire screen is fine and almost fern-like, quite unlike the coarse look of the tree species.
The flowers are pale pink with fine red veining, carried in loose clusters through the warmer months, and they read best trained overhead where you can look up into them.
It is a subtropical plant. Warm, frost-free, sheltered positions in Queensland and northern New South Wales suit it best; further south it wants a hot wall and will look thin after a cold winter. Give it a real structure to climb, water through summer, and prune once flowering finishes to stop the stems tangling into a knot.
