How quickly should I plant it?

For best results, unpack your plant promptly, water it well, and plant it as soon as practical.

Give your plant the best start after delivery.

  • Unpack your plant promptly and check the soil moisture on arrival.
  • Water deeply after planting to settle soil around the root zone.
  • Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, without leaving it waterlogged.
  • Choose a planting position suited to the plant's light requirements.
  • Add mulch around the base to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
  • Avoid piling mulch against the trunk or stem.
  • For hedging or screening plants, trim lightly once established to encourage denser growth.

Care requirements vary by variety, climate, season, and planting location. Always match watering, sunlight, and soil conditions to the specific plant you are buying.

Japanese Box - Buxus microphylla microphylla Topiary Balls

Buying box already clipped into a ball buys you the years of growing and shaping that make it expensive in the first place. Buxus microphylla microphylla carries small, rounded, slightly cupped leaves that hold a mid green through an Australian summer better than English box, which tends to yellow and scorch in open sun. Growth is slow and dense, so a clipped surface stays tight for months rather than breaking into loose shoots after a few weeks.

Two clips a year suits most gardens, one after the spring flush and a tidy up in late summer. Do not cut back into bare old wood. Box reshoots from it reluctantly, and a scalped side of a ball can take two or three seasons to fill again.

Watch for box psyllid, which cups and distorts the new tips, and keep water up to balls in pots, where the root mass fills the container and dries out faster than the top growth suggests. The 200L stock is heavy and needs lifting gear on site.

Choosing a size

This plant is available in 3 sizes, from 500mm up to 200L, priced from $849.00 to $2639.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. Every size here is established stock rather than a starter plant, so this line is intended for immediate effect rather than for growing on. Not sure which to choose?
