Judas Tree - Cercis siliquastrum
Few small trees flower out of solid trunk wood, and that habit is what people notice first about the Judas tree. Clusters of deep pink pea flowers push directly through the bark in spring, ahead of the deciduous canopy of rounded leaves, and around the Mediterranean the flowers are traditionally picked for salads and pickling.
As a garden tree it stays modest, spreading wider than it is tall with age, over a rough dark trunk. The shade beneath is light enough to underplant. It handles heat and dry soil once established, copes with alkaline conditions that upset many ornamentals, and colours yellow before the leaves fall.
Give it full sun to part shade and drainage. The failures we hear about are nearly always wet feet in clay, transplant shock from disturbed roots, or sunken canker on a limb that was pruned too hard. Plant high, water deeply but not often, and leave the framework alone once it has set.

This plant is available in 5 sizes, from 200mm up to 200L, priced from $38.95 to $1529.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
