Fig - Ficus Burgundy
Buyers after edible figs should look elsewhere. This is a rubber plant, a selection of Ficus elastica grown for large, thick, oval leaves that hold deep burgundy to almost black tones in good light, with each new leaf pushing out of a bright red sheath.
Indoors it is one of the more forgiving big statement plants: bright indirect light near a window, water once the top of the mix has dried, and an occasional wipe over the leaves so they keep their gloss. Dark corners cost you the colour first and the lower leaves next.
Outdoors in frost free coastal and subtropical gardens it is a different animal. Growth is fast and a mature tree is large, with strong surface and buttress roots, so keep it well away from paving, pipes and house footings or restrict it to a big pot. The milky sap that runs from a cut stem irritates skin, and it is not something you want pets or small children chewing on.

This plant is available in 3 sizes, from 140mm up to 300mm, priced from $17.95 to $90.95 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant.
