Fig - Ficus Ruby
Ruby is a variegated rubber plant, a Ficus elastica selection grown for leaves marbled in cream, green and pink rather than the plain dark burgundy of the older forms. New growth pushes out of a rosy sheath and carries the strongest colour, so a well lit plant looks quite different from one kept in a dim room.
Bright, indirect light is what keeps the pink coming. Direct midday sun through glass scorches the pale sections, while low light pushes the plant back toward green. Water when the top of the mix dries and let it drain right through. Rubber plants drop leaves when they sit wet, and also when they are shifted suddenly between light levels, so give a new plant time to settle before assuming something is wrong.
Outside the tropics treat it as a container plant for a bright patio or indoors. In frost free coastal Queensland it can go in the ground, but ficus roots are aggressive and belong well away from pipes, paving and footings. The milky sap irritates skin.
