Red Silky Oak - Grevillea banksii prostrate Red
Most Grevillea banksii in cultivation grow as upright large shrubs, so the prostrate red form catches people out. It runs sideways along the ground rather than up, throwing long horizontal limbs clothed in deeply divided, ferny leaves that are dark above and silvery-felted beneath. The flower brushes are the same heavy terminal spikes as the tall form, in deep red, held upright above the foliage and worked over by honeyeaters through the warmer months.
Use it over a dry embankment, spilling from a raised bed, or as rough cover under established eucalypts. It wants full sun, sharp drainage and very little water once the roots are down. Two cautions worth knowing. The leaf and flower hairs irritate some people's skin, so wear sleeves when pruning. And in humid coastal gardens on heavy soil this species can collapse quickly from root rot, so mound the planting hole and keep mulch off the stem. Avoid phosphorus-rich fertilisers, including most lawn and rose products.
