Grevillea GaudiChaudi
Run your hand over the new growth and you will find it soft, bronze-red and lobed like a small oak leaf, which is the quickest way to pick Grevillea gaudichaudii out of a nursery row. This is a genuinely prostrate hybrid, a cross of G. acanthifolia and G. laurifolia, and it spreads sideways for metres while staying only ankle deep, layering itself down wherever a stem meets moist soil.
The flowers are one-sided toothbrushes in deep maroon to burgundy, mostly through the cooler months into spring, sitting on the surface of the mat where they are easy to see.
It is a bank and batter plant first and foremost: hillsides, embankments, the awkward strip above a retaining wall, or tumbling over rock. Give it sun, decent drainage and room, because it will not sit politely in a small pocket. Its weakness is prolonged wet in heavy soil, where the older centre can rot out. Trim runners back at the edge rather than shearing the whole plant over.
