Olive Grevillea - Grevillea olivacea Red
Unlike the ferny-leaved grevilleas most people picture, Grevillea olivacea carries thick, blunt, oval leaves with a dull grey-green cast, close enough to an olive leaf to have given the plant its name. It builds into a dense, rounded shrub that holds cover right to the ground, and the red form carries clusters of curved spider flowers along the stems from late winter into spring, when little else in a native bed is doing much.
In Western Australia it is a standard informal hedge and windbreak plant, at home on limestone and on exposed coastal blocks where salt-laden wind shreds softer shrubs. It shapes reasonably well for a grevillea if you trim after flowering.
Elsewhere, drainage decides everything. This is a dry winter rainfall species, and in humid eastern gardens on clay it is prone to sudden collapse from root rot, so plant on a raised mound, keep mulch clear of the trunk, and avoid summer irrigation once it is established.
