Native Wisteria - Hardenbergia comptoniana
Western Australia contributes this one to the trade, and it differs from the eastern coral pea in a way you can see at a glance: the leaves are divided into three narrow leaflets rather than carried as a single broad blade. It is an evergreen twiner, light in build rather than heavy, and it climbs by winding its stems instead of clinging, so it needs wire, mesh or an open lattice to get anywhere at all.
Sprays of small purple pea flowers appear through the cooler end of the year and carry on into spring, held in loose trailing racemes that look best when the plant is grown high enough to be seen from below. Landscapers run it over courtyard screens, along balustrades and through low native shrubs where it scrambles rather than climbs.
The usual problem is wet feet. Drainage matters far more to it than fertility, and soggy winter soil in heavy clay will kill an established plant faster than any drought. Prune after flowering to keep the base clothed.
