Hardenbergia, the purple coral pea or happy wanderer, solves winter: from July it drapes itself in sprays of pea flowers while the rest of the garden waits for spring, on an evergreen native climber tough enough for verges and embankments. The classic purple selections lead, from the species Hardenbergia violacea and the old favourite Happy Wanderer to the heavy-flowering Purple Spray and rich Sea of Purple. The palette widens with Pink Spray and Sweet Heart in rose tones and the white forms White Out and Mini HaHa. Two selections change the habit entirely: Meema grows as a dense mounding shrub-groundcover rather than a climber, and the Western Australian native wisteria (Hardenbergia comptoniana) brings finer leaves and cascading lilac flower sprays for sheltered gardens.

Growing notes: hardenbergia asks for sun to light shade, decent drainage and something to climb, a fence wire, mesh panel or open shrub, and it will do the rest, reaching two to three metres of cover in a couple of seasons. Prune hard immediately after flowering, cutting back by up to half; this single habit keeps the plant leafy to the base instead of bare-stemmed, and doubles next winter's flowers. As a groundcover with nothing to climb, it spreads into a weed-smothering mat. Feed lightly with native fertiliser in spring.
