Kangaroo Paw - Anigozanthos Bush Zest PBR
Although kangaroo paws look desert-hardy, most of the modern garden types trace back to Anigozanthos flavidus from the wetter south west of WA, and that parentage is what lets them survive in an ordinary garden bed rather than a specialist sand plot. Bush Zest belongs to that line of tough hybrids, selected for vigour and for resistance to the black ink spot that disfigures older strains, with flowers in the warm yellow to lime range the name suggests.
Give it full sun and open ground. Water while it settles in, then very little. The one job that genuinely matters is the annual hard cut: take spent flower stems and tired outer fans right back near ground level once flowering finishes so clean new growth replaces them. Skip it and the clump collects dead leaf, holds moisture and blackens from the middle out.
Honeyeaters work the flowers steadily through the season, so put it where you can watch them. Offered in 140mm and 170mm.
