Lilly Pilly - Acmena smithii Sublime PBR (Syzygium smithii)
Which lilly pilly can you plant beside a path without ending up with pimpled, distorted leaves? Acmena selections like Sublime are the usual answer. The lilly pilly psyllid that blisters so many Syzygium hedges largely leaves Acmena smithii alone, and Sublime was chosen as a compact, dense form with bright lime green new growth flushing over darker mature foliage.
It clips into a tight hedge in the low to mid range and holds its shape, rather than running away on you as a screening tree. Fluffy cream flowers are followed by soft white to mauve berries, worth knowing before you plant it over pale paving or a pool surround, because the fruit stains and gets walked inside.
Keep the water up through the first two summers. Drought stress early on is what produces bare bases and patchy hedges years later. Botanists now fold Acmena into Syzygium, so you will see the same plant labelled Syzygium smithii. Supplied in 5lt.
