Mandevilla Crimson Fantasy PBR (Dipladenia)
If frost reaches your garden, treat this one as a pot plant that can be moved. Mandevilla, still widely sold under the name dipladenia, is a tropical twiner grown for glossy dark leaves and deep red trumpet flowers that keep coming through the warm months. In Brisbane and coastal New South Wales it climbs happily on a trellis or a mailbox; in Melbourne, Canberra or the Adelaide Hills it is far safer in a container against a warm north facing wall, brought under cover when the cold sets in.
It flowers on new growth, so a tidy up in late winter or early spring pays for itself. Keep the roots moist but never standing in a saucer of water. Mealybug and scale hide where stems twist together, so check those junctions each time you water.
The sap is milky and can irritate skin, and it is not something for children or pets to chew. Sold in 140mm, ready to train onto a small frame.
