Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum dissectum Orangeola Standards
Few of the laceleaf maples hold their colour through a hot Australian summer as well as Orangeola. The finely cut, almost thread like leaflets open orange-red in spring, settle to a bronzed red-green through the warm months, then flush orange again with each new growth wave before finishing bright in autumn.
Grown as a standard, the naturally cascading habit is lifted onto a clear stem so the branches spill outward and down into a broad weeping dome. That makes it a specimen rather than a background plant: over a low wall, beside steps, at the corner of a courtyard, or in a large glazed pot where the drape can be seen properly.
Dissectums are thin leaved and burn readily. Morning sun with shelter from hot afternoon wind is the safe recipe, along with a cool root run under mulch and consistent summer water. Prune only to remove dead or crossing twigs, in winter, and keep the cuts small.
