Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum Herbstfeuer
Do not buy this one for summer colour. The name is German for autumn fire, and through the warm months Herbstfeuer is a plain green leaved palmatum, upright and open, quietly getting on with growing. The payoff comes late, when the canopy runs through orange to a strong red that holds better than many of the seedling greens sold alongside it.
That makes it useful where you want green shade over a courtyard for most of the year and one dramatic month at the end of it. It is also less demanding through summer than the red leaved forms, which have to work harder to keep pigment under Australian light.
Autumn colour on any Japanese maple depends on the season. Cool nights and a gradual finish give the best display, while a hot dry March followed by wind will strip leaves before they colour properly. Consistent soil moisture right through to leaf drop is the one factor most within your control.
