Japanese Maple - Acer palmatum Red Pygmy
Another of the strap-leaf maples, but in dark red rather than green. Red Pygmy carries long, narrow, ribbon like lobes on a small, densely twiggy frame, and the effect from a few paces back is a soft red haze rather than the solid block of colour you get from a broad leaved red such as Bloodgood.
Expect the colour to shift through the year. Deep maroon red in spring, a good deal of bronze and olive through the heat of summer, then gold and orange before leaf drop. Anyone told it stays scarlet all season has been sold a story.
Scale is the selling point. It stays genuinely small and slow, so it belongs in a courtyard, a large pot, a rockery edge, or a Japanese style planting where proportion matters more than shade. Morning sun with afternoon protection gives the best colour without burning those fine leaves. Full exposure to hot westerlies will not work.
