Pear - Corella Pyrus communis
Corella is an Australian-bred pear, and the fruit is what sells it: small to medium, smooth skinned, carrying a red blush over yellow-green when ripe, with crisp white flesh and a clean sweet flavour. It eats well straight off the tree and holds its shape better than a Williams when cooked or bottled.
Like other European pears it is deciduous, flowers in spring, and sets a much heavier crop with a compatible pollinator nearby, so plan on a second variety such as Williams or Packham within bee range. Pears want full sun, deep soil and steady water while the fruit is filling, since drought stress at that stage gives you small, gritty fruit. They handle heavier soils better than most stone fruit. Watch for pear and cherry slug in early summer, a small dark larva that skeletonises the leaves and is dealt with by hosing it off or dusting the foliage. Winter pruning to an open framework keeps the fruiting spurs within reach.
