New Zealand Flax - Phormium Chief
Salt wind, thin coastal soil and reflected heat off paving are the conditions where flax earns its place, and Chief is grown as an upright feature clump for exactly those spots. Full sun through to part shade suits it, and once established it runs on low to moderate water.
Leaf colour in flax reads differently through the day because the blades are held edge on, catching backlight in the morning and flattening out at midday. Site the plant where it will be lit from behind for part of the day and the clump does far more work.
Grooming is where most people go wrong. Never shear the tips flat, which leaves blunt brown ends that never recover. Instead pull spent outer leaves down and out from the base with a gloved hand, or cut them off at ground level. The root plate becomes dense and heavy with age, so keep new plantings well clear of paving edges, pipes and pool coping.
