New Zealand Flax - Phormium tenax Anna Red
Expect the stiff upright carriage of the species here rather than the arching, weeping look of the smaller hybrids, because Anna Red is a red toned selection of Phormium tenax. It holds a firm vertical line in a bed even when everything around it has gone soft.
Colour holds best in full sun. In part shade the tone turns duller and greener, which is not a fault so much as a trade off. The place to be careful is a west facing wall over paving, where reflected afternoon heat can bleach and crisp the leaf edges.
When you groom the clump, look right down into the leaf bases. Mealybug and scale shelter in the tight overlapping fans where contact sprays never reach, and the first sign is usually sooty mould on the lower leaves rather than the insects themselves. Pull affected old fans out whole instead of spraying blindly. The 140mm suits mass planting, the 300mm gives an immediate specimen.
