New Zealand Flax - Phormium hybrid Maiden
Not every flax stays a manageable size, and buying on habit rather than looks saves a lot of digging later. Hybrid flaxes of this kind are generally softer and more arching than the big upright Phormium tenax, which makes them easier to place beside a path or in a container.
Grown in a pot, give it the largest container you can justify, a coarse mix with genuine drainage, and slow release fertiliser in spring. Flax roots fill a pot quickly, and a plant that suddenly wilts between waterings has usually run out of room rather than water.
In the ground the clump thickens over several years and can then be split. Cut down through the crown with a sharp spade in early spring, keeping a good fan of leaves and a share of roots on each division, then shorten the leaves by about a third so the piece is not rocked over while it re roots. Evergreen, so there is no bare season to plan around.
