New Zealand flax (Phormium) does the architectural work of a cordyline with the toughness of a tussock: bold upright fans of coloured foliage that hold their shape in wind, salt and frost. This page lists every phormium available from our partner farms.

Growing notes: phormiums handle almost everything, coastal gales, frost, wet winters, dry summers, and heavy soil, which is why they anchor so many exposed gardens that defeat fussier plants. Full sun keeps the coloured cultivars vivid; deep shade fades them toward green. They are outstanding in large pots, where the fan shape reads as sculpture. Maintenance is one job: cut spent or tattered outer leaves right at the base once or twice a year. If an old clump outgrows its spot, divide it in spring with a spade and replant the strongest fans.

In humid districts, give them airflow and avoid overhead watering in summer to keep the crowns clean.
