Orange Trumpet Vine - Pyrostegia ignea
If you have a long stretch of chain wire, a shed wall or a heavy pergola to cover, orange trumpet vine will do it faster than almost anything else you can plant. Pyrostegia ignea, more often listed now as P. venusta, is a Brazilian climber that grips with tendrils and then throws out cascades of narrow orange tubular flowers through winter and early spring, when little else in the garden is doing anything. In mild frost free districts it holds its leaves all year and simply slows in cold weather.
The vigour is the catch. It wants a strong structure rather than a light trellis, and it will run into gutters, roof cavities and neighbouring trees if nobody takes to it. Cut it back hard straight after flowering finishes, which also keeps the flowering wood low enough to actually see from the ground. One district note: in subtropical Queensland and northern New South Wales it escapes gardens and smothers native vegetation along creek lines and bushland edges, so if you are anywhere near remnant bush up that way, plant something less determined. South of that it stays where you put it.
Full sun gives the heaviest flowering; in shade you get leaf and very little colour. Well drained soil, and go easy on the nitrogen for the same reason. Sold in 5 litre.
