How quickly should I plant it?

For best results, unpack your plant promptly, water it well, and plant it as soon as practical.

Give your plant the best start after delivery.

  • Unpack your plant promptly and check the soil moisture on arrival.
  • Water deeply after planting to settle soil around the root zone.
  • Keep soil evenly moist while the plant establishes, without leaving it waterlogged.
  • Choose a planting position suited to the plant's light requirements.
  • Add mulch around the base to help retain moisture and reduce weeds.
  • Avoid piling mulch against the trunk or stem.
  • For hedging or screening plants, trim lightly once established to encourage denser growth.

Care requirements vary by variety, climate, season, and planting location. Always match watering, sunlight, and soil conditions to the specific plant you are buying.

Ornamental Pear - Pyrus calleryana Bradford Grafted

Of the Callery pears in the trade, Bradford is the broad one. Where Capital and Chanticleer hold a narrow column, Bradford builds a wide pyramid that rounds out with age, so it belongs on an open avenue or a generous nature strip rather than a tight townhouse frontage. White blossom covers the bare branches in early spring, glossy leaves follow, and autumn brings red and burgundy tones that develop best where the nights get genuinely cold.

Two practical points before you order. Bradford is known for tight, crowded branch unions, and older specimens can split in storms, so formative pruning in the first few years to space the scaffold limbs along the trunk is time well spent. Second, Callery pear seedlings are recorded as an environmental weed in parts of New South Wales and Victoria where different cultivars cross pollinate, so check the local council list before planting near bushland.

Trees are grafted, so keep the trunk clear of suckers. Full sun, moderate water, and 400mm or 500mm stock from two of our growing sites.

Choosing a size

This plant is available in 2 sizes, from 400mm up to 500mm, priced from $199.00 to $229.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. Every size here is established stock rather than a starter plant, so this line is intended for immediate effect rather than for growing on. Not sure which to choose?
