Snow Pear - Pyrus nivalis
Against a green hedge or a rendered wall, this one does something no other pear does. Pyrus nivalis carries a dense white felt on its new shoots and leaf undersides, so the whole canopy reads pale grey from a distance and lifts anything dark planted behind it. The silver is what you are buying.
Spring brings white blossom on a broadly upright, deciduous frame, followed by small hard fruit of no eating value. Growth is moderate and the habit is oval when young, filling out with age.
Full sun is not optional. In shade the felt thins, the colour falls back to plain green, and the reason you bought the tree disappears. Moderate water suits it.
The pest to know is pear and cherry slug, the small dark sawfly larvae that graze leaves down to a brown skeleton over summer. A hose or a dusting knocks them off. Bare root stock lifts in winter and is the practical way to plant a long row.
