Swamp White Oak - Quercus bicolour
The name refers to the leaves. Dark green and slightly leathery on top, they carry a white felted underside, and a breeze through the canopy turns the whole tree silver for a moment. Younger limbs also shed bark in loose curling flakes, which gives the tree some texture in winter once the leaves are down.
Swamp white oak differs from most oaks in what it will put up with underground. It handles heavy clay, poor drainage and ground that floods after rain, and once established it copes with dry spells as well, which makes it a sensible pick for detention basins, low points in parkland and verges with compacted soil.
The crown is broad and open on a fairly short trunk, so it belongs over lawn, in schoolyards or down a wide avenue rather than in a tight strip. Growth is slow to moderate in full sun on moderate water, and acorns follow on older trees.

This plant is available in 6 sizes, from 200mm up to 100L, priced from $46.95 to $649.00 per plant. The size shown is the pot the plant arrives in, which is the rootball, not the height of the plant. The smaller pots hold younger plants that cost less each and establish quickly, which suits hedges, screens and mass planting where the plant count adds up. The larger sizes carry several more years of growth on the farm and give height and presence straight away, which is what you want for a single feature position or a screen that cannot wait.
