Pin Oak - Quercus palustris Freefall
Ordinary pin oaks hang onto their dead brown leaves for most of winter, rattling away on the tree until new growth finally pushes them off in spring. Freefall was selected to stop that. It colours in autumn and then drops cleanly, which is the difference between one tidy leaf clean-up and months of slow shedding over a driveway or a pool.
In every other respect it is a pin oak: strong central leader, pyramidal outline, deeply cut glossy leaves, and a slow to moderate rate of growth that eventually makes a large shade or avenue tree. Being grafted, form stays consistent from tree to tree, which matters when you are planting a row.
Two things to watch. The lower branches sweep downwards, so plan to lift the skirt progressively over paths and mowing lines. And on limey soil the foliage yellows between the veins, so aim for acidic to neutral ground and full sun.
